Why I use a 2011 Thunderbolt Display in 2019!

Why I use a 2011 Thunderbolt Display in 2019!

The Thunderbolt Display is lit, much like a candle, my channel, or a small camp fire. This monitor was perfectly designed for the Retina MacBook Pro lineup. It was built before they were released, but they clearly knew what they were doing. It adds ports that the Retina MacBook Pro takes away when compared to an upgradable MacBook Pro. The 2011 and 2012 MacBook Pro will also work on this monitor, but since they already have the ports, I would suggest purchasing a cinema display.

Thank you for watching, and remember my dog and cat are hungry…

I have been thinking of getting one as a second display for my imac pro.. same size, will look ok next to it.. and i already have the apple thunderbolt 3 adapter.. should work great in this situation yes? I'll use all the usb ports on it for my software dongles and maybe hang a usb c drive off the end.

I got one for $90 missing the front glass and stand. A new stand was $40 and a new front glass, which just snaps in with magnets, was $45. It works well with my mid 2014 MacBook Pro, which has a thunderbolt 2 port that, in all the years I've owned it, I never used until I got the monitor.

Hey, do you know if there is a way to connect a PS4 to the thunderbolt? I’ve got a Thunderbolt Display and I’m wanting to buy a PS4 but don’t really want to have to buy a tv when I’ve got a display this good. Thank you in advance

You can use the TB display with a pc if you purchase a pcie thunderbolt card. Mine works well. Just make sure that your motherboard includes a TBH (thunderbolt header) to plug the card into. Also video via displayport is needed.

My original Thunderbolt Display recently died and I initially replaced it with a new Samsung 4K display. I tried, for a week, to like it but didn’t. So I found a Thunderbolt refurb on eBay for $250 (including shipping). Returned the 4K and am loving my Thunderbolt refurb!

Just bought one for $10… YES TEN DOLLARS! I went to a warehouse sale where a man was liquidating his father's ebay reselling business. Everything was to be sold that day. The guy said a couple people looked at it and he figured be they thought it didn't work because of the price. Brought it to my neighborhood computer fix store to have it hooked up to a MacBook and it worked beautifully. FYI I use Android's so I knew nothing about apple products but am now crossing over.

IMHO – There are no better 27-inch monitors then the Cinema Display or the Thunderbolt Display. To me they are the right size and look incredible. I have both, the Cinema for my systems that use a display-port and the Thunderbolt for my Mac systems w/Thunderbolt.

I just bought one for $200 and I'm loving it with my 2013 15" MBPr, i don't know why I didn't do this sooner. I've been using an old Sharp 36" LCD TV, mostly for watching movies every now and then, but it sucks for photo editing. Now I wanna get a Henge Dock maybe, but so far my desk is looking better and less cluttered.

How does the font rendering look on your Thunderbolt Display? Mojave removed sub-pixel antialiasing so text and smaller graphics looks worse on non-Retina or less than UHD displays.

I LOVE the TB displays, man. It's a shame my use case wouldn't benefit from one anymore (I have an ultra wide that I have to use with both an iMac for work and my MacBook Pro 2015 for music/gaming, and I have to use an eGPU for games so I can't connect a TBD to that) but you really don't find something that has a fantastic screen AND a built-in 2.1 speaker setup AND a powersupply AND a built in webcam AND an I/O hub AND MacOS integration… I mean it really was a unicorn of a device.

great point of view! mine is a late 2013 MacBook Pro, still kick ass!
I'm locking for an external monitor,
does your Macbook pro overheating with that external monitor ?
I usually use a cheap 1080p external monitor and
my MacBook Pro has +10 degree after a couple of minutes is connected
    thanks

BEFORE YOU BUY ONE: it's not incredibly common, but several of these displays have suffered from intermittent blacking-out (solved only by unplugging the display and then plugging it back in). If you're in the market for one of these, make sure you confirm with the seller that the display runs continuously and does NOT shut off within however many minutes. The majority of these displays work without issues, but you might as well double-check for this issue, before you purchase one of these.

I recently purchased one for only $257, and it's been so great! There are no signs of the dreaded black-out issue, and the case is in fine cosmetic condition. I love the fact that the display has an Ethernet jack and a USB hub. Also, since it has FW800, I can easily transfer information from my Mac Pro, to my MacBook Pro. I loved using my 12-core 2009 Mac Pro, but I was aiming for a more practical set-up (especially considering I am not within a permanent residence right now). And so, I took my OG Retina MBP and paired it with this display. All I have to do every day is unplug / plug-in two cables, and my desktop setup is both complete at home and easy to take with. The built-in webcam and speakers are decently good, and the panel has fine colors and viewing angles. The construction and thoughtfulness that went into this product is yet another great example of Apple's caring about both design and function. Few computer companies offer products that still feel new after ~8 years.

Fun fact: this display houses a small fan which exhausts air from the bottom left corner of the display.

I just bought oneon craigslist.. I use it to play runescape.. and well just download music, social media, netflix. etc. It looks amazing! nice and bright I paid a good price cuz I respected the condition. I didn't mind because online I saw them going for $500 mint usually.. LOVE IT SO FAR only drawback is seller didn't have the original box packaging but other than that I found a box to transport it when moving around & I guess there's no audio port but it is easy to get a usb to audio jack nowadays if you wanna plug speakers in for louder sound. Other than that it looks amazing with my RGB keyboard and well slowly building my dream Macbook Pro Desktop SETUP! thanks alot honestly watched your video like 15x maybe

(well i had a very long comment then i deleted it by accidentally reloading the page so rip)

What I did want to ask is related to some upgrades i wanted to make to my mac pro (mid 2010). I'm trying to get some more ram because 16gig isnt really cutting it for me anymore. But would performance be impacted at all if i were to get fewer sticks of more power vs more sticks of less? i've seen people say both sides are better, and i dont really know anymore at this point. I have 8 slots, so neither would be a huge problem, but i just want to know if what i get will impact usability.

Also, i need a new graphics card because Mojave but also because my current one is dying (it's still the Radeon 5770 from the original system lol). For that I was told that a nvidia gtx 780 6gb for all my graphics, video, and music related work. I was looking for one on ebay, but the only one i found was used for $500 which is looking kinda overpriced. Is there a better option you think or should I just wait till these guys (http://www.macvidcards.com/store/p1/Nvidia_GTX_780_3_GB_and_6_GB.html) have it back in stock or something?
